DevOps and automated deployment

If changes go live by FTP or by hand, one mistake can take the site down. We set up version control, a staging site, one-click deploys, backups and monitoring.

Signs you need this

  • Changes are uploaded by FTP or edited directly on the live server
  • Nobody is quite sure which version of the code is live
  • There is no staging site, so updates are tested on real customers
  • Backups exist, but nobody has ever tried restoring one
  • You find out the site is down when a customer tells you

What we set up

  1. Version control. Your theme, custom code and configuration in Git, in your own GitHub or GitLab account.
  2. Staging. A copy of the live site where every change is checked first.
  3. Automated deployment. A pipeline that runs checks and deploys to staging and then live, with one click or on merge, and can roll back.
  4. Backups you can trust. Scheduled, off-site, and tested by actually restoring one.
  5. Monitoring. Uptime and SSL certificate alerts, and error logging, so you hear about problems first.
  6. Documentation. A short written guide to how it all works.

Included

  • Git repository and branching set-up
  • Staging environment
  • CI/CD pipeline with automated checks and deployment

Questions we are asked

We are a small business. Do we really need this?

If more than one person changes the site, or a broken release would cost you sales or leads, yes. The setup is done once, and every change after that is safer and faster.

Which tools do you use?

Git hosted on GitHub or GitLab, GitHub Actions or GitLab CI for automated tests and deployments, Docker where it helps, and the hosting you already have, or AWS, Cloudflare, Pantheon, Platform.sh and similar.

Do we have to change hosting?

Not usually. Most hosts with SSH access can deploy from Git. If yours cannot, we will explain the options in the quote.

Will you be locked in?

No. Everything lives in your own accounts, and we write down how it works so any developer can carry on.
